Brief history
Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest cultural centers of Russia.
UNESCO included Nizhny Novgorod into the list of 100 cities representing
the world's historical and cultural value.
Between its founding and the 14 th. century the city was burnt and ruined seven times by the tribes and armies of Tatars. People restored and renewed the city each time. In 1393 Nizhny Novgorod lost its independence and incorporated into the great Moskow principality, it although lost its military importance and began
The people took active part in the reforms of Peter the Great. In 1798 the first theater was founded in Nizhny Novgorod. Since 1817 when the celebrated trade fair was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, it became a city of an international importance. the turnover of the fair got 30mln. rubles at that time. From the second half of the 19 century Nizhny Novgorod became one of the biggest industrial centers in Russia. About 50% of the total number of Russian ships were made in Nizhny Novgorod. The first tram in Russia was produced there. Nizhny Novgorod remained the industrial center in the USSR. In 1937 the biggest auto factory in Russia was founded there. The museums and theatres are its historical and cultural places. Nizhny Novgorod is also a university center.
Nizhny Novgorod region is rich in domestic art craft:
carving and painting on wood (the famous Khokhloma, Gorodets,
Pavlov maiden painting), embroidering in gold, treatment of metals and
clay, bone lacing, making toys. The creations of people's art are represented in
expositions in the museum of domestic art craft.
City's Day is the first Sunday in September. A lot entertainments, concerts, fairs, parade on Minin Square,
and at night several fireworks around the city.
We
are going to play Russian fairy tale story "Morozko". The Father
Frost or Morozko presents a kind girl with a nice clothing, silver
and gold jewelry to wear and punishes an evil one. Kids prepared costumes and learnt
their roles. Just before the Old New Year, which comes at night from January 13 to
January 14.
